JANUARY 2012 NEWSLETTER
We had a very interesting and thought provoking talk by Bernie Gravett on child trafficking and its impact on the U.K. It is a problem that seemingly will never go away as there are always foreign gangs to replace the ones that are caught. Sometimes the only satisfaction that Bernie and his colleagues have is that they make life difficult for these gang leaders by confiscating their money and cars. We all felt indebted to this small group of police who do this work.
Our carol singing before Christmas raised £680 for the Maggies' cancer centre in Oxford. We thanked all those involved in this annual event, the money seems to get more each year.
We collected £30 in our refreshments jar over two meetings for the Denman Appeal.
I have received and e-mail from a Dr. Mavis Curtis, via Tackley, who is doing some research into W.I. banners for the Oxford Times Special Edition. She wants to photograph, measure and describe them in an article. I have e-mailed her to say that we would be delighted to take part. I expect she has had many such replies.
Next meeting will be on Wednesday 15th February when the speaker will be Miss Rebecca Thorne on Bespoke Shoe Making.
Speakers Hostess - Margaret Fissenden.
Flowers - Clare Steele.
Tea Hostesses - Lyn Barnett and Val Holt.
